Zoe Camp, a Mathews resident and Mathews High School senior, did restoration work on Gwynn’s Island’s Keeble Cemetery this summer as the final project to earn her Eagle Scout designation with the Boy Scouts of America.
The project began in 2022, when Camp learned about the need for restoration work through her former Scoutmaster, whose relatives live nearby. She submitted her proposal to the Boy Scouts of America for work that included replacing cedar posts and rails for the fence that surrounds the cemetery and repairing a bench for visitors, said a press release.
In a combined effort, cemetery custodian Jimmie Rowe and Gwynn’s Island Museum curator Tom Edwards provided background and historical information for the project, while the Gwynn’s Island Civic League Foundation gave Camp a $500 grant to complete her fundraising. Other scouts and Camp’s parents pitched in to help with the work.
