The expression “yum-yum” dates to the 1800s with two possibilities for its origin: derived from a Christmas and Lent delicacy of that name in Holland, or from baby talk for delicious: either way, it indicates pleasure in food.
Over the years this combination of two words has been used in various ways. At Gloucester County Library, the first Yum Yum Cookie Contest was held in 2023, and followed up with the second in 2024.
This year, 54 bakers registered for three categories of bakers: grades 3-5, grades 6-12, and adults 18+. Categories were gingerbread and baker’s choice. Each contestant could submit an entry in each of the cookie categories. They had to drop off six cookies and the recipe before submission deadline with a request for “no cookies that require refrigeration.”Each entry was assigned a number; judges did not know the ages or names of the bakers as they judged. They rated the cookies on appearance, aroma, texture, taste, visual impact and creative design.
