‘You brought a community together’ Coach reflects on Blue Devils’ championship season

MHS head coach Curtis Williamson keeps an eye on the clock in the waning minutes of the March 6 state quarterfinal game against Riverheads.

“I told them [his Blue Devil players], ‘You brought a community together. You brought the whole Mathews together’,” head coach Curtis Williamson said this week, as he reflected on the Mathews High School boys’ basketball team’s state championship season.
“Mathews County doesn’t always agree, but they all came together to support the team,” Williamson said. “It was an honor to coach this team.”
In a cruel twist of fate, the Blue Devils had to be satisfied with the title of VHSL Class 1 “co-champion” after last Thursday’s game against the Region C runner up Auburn Eagles was cancelled just a few hours before the scheduled tip-off at the VCU Siegel Center in Richmond.
Indications had been coming all day that the championship game was in doubt as concerns about the spread of the COVID-19 virus continued to grow.
