YMCA proposal addressed at town hall

A recent YMCA proposal to establish a preschool/day care program on school property was the main topic addressed at last Thursday’s Mathews County School Board town hall meeting.
The issue was brought up by one speaker in attendance, as well as by four people who had submitted their questions and comments in advance of the meeting, which was held in the Brooks Auditorium at Thomas Hunter Middle School. The proposal had been introduced the week before at the school board’s regular monthly meeting by Mathews Family YMCA representatives Caitlyn Leavens and Buzz Lambert. The YMCA is seeking support from the school board to use existing class space in the elementary school to house a program for 2-4 year-olds. At that Oct. 15 monthly meeting, the Y representatives stated that they would not be seeking any financial assistance from the school division for this program, only the space. The matter has yet to come before the board as an action item.
