Buzz Lambert, Executive Director of the Mathews Family YMCA, recognized and honored Gene Goin’s lifetime of community service at the End of Year Celebration of the Mathews Family YMCA Advisory Board. Goin, pictured at right, was born in Prospect, graduated from Farmville High School, and embarked on his career with the Virginia State Police as a dispatcher on the Eastern Shore until he was old enough to attend the State Police Academy. During his 38 years as a Virginia State Trooper, he also served in the U.S. Army Reserve. After retirement, he served with the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office for about 22 years. Along the way, he served his community through various service organizations. The Mathews Family YMCA honored Goin for his selfless service and commitment as a member of the Advisory Board for the past six years, a release stated. He was presented with a U.S. flag to commemorate his dedication to the community.
