The Gloucester High School varsity soccer team split games in recent action to move to 6-4 on the season.
The Dukes lost, 3-1, at Kecoughtan on April 22. Striker Nick Yarkey scored the only Gloucester goal in the first half, while the second half was scoreless. The Dukes played with more intensity in the second half but it was not enough for a comeback.
Playing at Menchville last Thursday, Gloucester prevailed, 1-0. The match remained scoreless until the second half when Yarkey received a precision pass from fellow forward Chris Bendit and threaded a shot between two defenders and into the lower left corner of the net for the win.
With the eruption of the crowd and the celebration of the players, the momentum remained on the Gloucester side just long enough to make it to the final whistle. The 1-0 victory shocked the Monarchs, who are tough to beat on their home field.
