Ware River Yacht Club in Gloucester held its 60th annual Virginia Governor’s Cup Regatta on Aug. 3 and 4, with special guest Travis Voyles, Virginia Secretary of Natural and Historic Resources, handing out the trophies, accompanied by Del. Keith Hodges (R-Urbanna) and WRYC Commodore Harry Taylor.
“We had two very good days of sailing with higher-than-average winds,” said event co-chair and WRYC Fleet Captain Jim Garrett. “Although we didn’t have quite the participation we had hoped, we had high quality participants, as we always have.”
Garrett extended thanks to all the participants, as well as to club volunteers, “who continue to prove what a great club Ware River is and a great event our Governor’s Cup is.”
A special award was given to Charlie McCoy of the Hampton One Design Class for the person with the longest continuous participation by a sailor in the regatta. McCoy, a member of Norfolk River Yacht and Country Club, has sailed in almost every WRYC Governor’s Cup regatta since 196...
