Work day set at Canine Companions estate

Mathews County Canine Companions will have a work day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the organization’s new facility at Eastbrooke Estate on John Clayton Memorial Highway.
Volunteers will work to prepare garden beds by weeding, trimming, planting, and mulching. Master Gardeners and landscapers will be on site to lend help and provide direction. Those volunteering should bring their small tools and wear gloves. Refreshments will be provided.

The 220-acre Eastbrooke Estate was donated to Canine Companions, a nationwide organization, by the estate of the late Helen and Murray Main. It is the historic home place of the renowned merchant mariners of Mathews who were memorialized in the 2017 book “The Mathews Men: Seven Brothers and the War Against Hitler’s U-Boats” by William Geroux.
