Last weekend, many members of the Middle Peninsula Amateur Radio Club under the leadership of Jerry Unverferth participated for the club’s first time in the Winter Field Day event from Abingdon Park. This emergency communication exercise is an annual event sponsored by the Winter Field Day Association and held on the last full weekend in January when many areas are stressed by adverse winter conditions. It draws worldwide participation with many stations operating using non-commercial energy sources to increase the level of preparedness for disasters in less-than-ideal conditions. Club members made 58 phone and 19 CW contacts with 28 states, including some as far away as Oregon, Arizona, Canada and Puerto Rico. Many of the contacts were with stations operating out in the field, though some were operating from the luxury of their home.
