Winona Colona Hogge of Wicomico, died at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital Jan. 3, 2012.
She was originally from Hopewell, Va., where she graduated from high school in 1944 and graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1948. She trained to be a school teacher, and served as a fourth grade teacher at Hayes Elementary School in Gloucester, before going to work at the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station. She retired a chemist from the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station Research and Development Ordnance Department in 1982.
Winona was an active member of the Ruth Sunday School Class of Providence Baptist Church. She was active in various community organizations including the Abingdon Woman’s Club. Winona had interests in gardening, genealogy and general scientific and historical curiosity.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, D. Wiley Hogge; sister, Jeanette C. Gorman of Blacksburg, Va.; children, Edward F. Hogge and wife Anne, Stuart D. Hogge and wife Maria, Bryan P. Hogge and wife Jane; grandchildren, Emily, Peter, Daniel and Ben.
Funeral services conducted by the Rev. Dr. Richard Croxton were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Providence Baptist Church. The family received friends Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.
