Winnington sentenced in New Year’s Eve shooting

Corbin Chase Winnington, 16, was sentenced to 25 years Monday following his June conviction of involuntary manslaughter (10 years), two counts of unlawful wounding and shooting (five years each), shooting, etc., in committing or attempting a felony (five years).
Winnington will serve these sentences concurrently, meaning that he will spend 10 years behind bars. He is currently serving his time with the Department of Juvenile Justice and will be reviewed in two years.
The conviction stems from a New Year’s Eve party at a residence on Guinea Road that left 19-year-old Tyler Heywood of Mathews, a bystander, dead of a gunshot wound, and 22-year-old Damarkus Key of Gloucester injured. Winnington was 15 at the time of the party.
Debbie Heywood provided testimony to the court ahead of sentencing. She described her grandson, Tyler, as sweet, kind and hardworking. “He was an all-around great kid,” said Heywood.
