WILSON MARION HOGGE JR.

Beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend, Wilson Marion Hogge Jr. passed from this world on November 4, 2024 at age 77. Born on August 13, 1947 to Lorraine and Wilson Hogge Sr., Wilson was the second of four children, followed by Robin (Theresa) and Tammy. He was raised in Gloucester in a multi-generational fox-hunting family, a pastime he continued for most of his life. In 1967, Wilson served in the 1st Infantry Division, the Big Red One, during the Vietnam War. Following his return from war, he met, courted, and married Jean Carolyn Darnell, and began a rich and peaceful life. He retired from a long and prosperous career at the Smurfit-Stone Corp. in West Point which enabled him to support and raise a growing family. Early on, when money was tight, Wilson painted houses and would trap muskrats in the local marshlands to supplement his income. He loved the solitude trapping offered and continued this passion well into his sixties. Jean and Wilson shared a love for making things grow. Every year he grew a large garden filled with various vegetables and would not let anyone leave his home empty-handed. He maintained fruit trees and particularly loved his ancient pecan trees and their annual bounty. The days leading up to his passing were filled with joy and anticipation of an annual hunting trip with Daniel and friends (a fact of which he continued to remind everyone until the end). He was an active and devoted member of Salem Community Church devoting much of his time to their food pantry.
He was preceded in death by his youngest son, Adam Darnell Hogge, his parents, and oldest sister, Linda. He leaves behind his wife, Jean Darnell Hogge; sons, Jeffrey Wayne (Becky) and Daniel Wilson (Heather), and grandchildren, Kelsie, Adam, Rey, Owen, and Isla. Wilson was a loving and kind person. He was a patient and gentle husband. He was a role model to his sons and grandchildren. He cared deeply for his siblings and brothers and sisters-in-law. His capacity to help others seemed endless. A close family friend recently imparted, “He was one of a kind, a wonderful, funny, joyful force of life…” Our worlds are dimmer with his passing. Services are incomplete.
