Williamsburg photographer Bay School’s artist of the month

Photographer Sue Maida of Williamsburg is the Bay School Community Arts Center’s artist of the month. An exhibit of nine photographs in her Sea Glass collection is on display at the school’s Art Speaks Gallery on Main Street in Mathews.
Maida came up with the idea to photograph sea glass after hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas in September 2019. The storm decimated the Abaco Islands and surrounding areas, including the home of a friend who sold her collection of Bahamian sea glass jewelry and donated the proceeds to a relief foundation.
Maida thought it might be interesting to see what the lens may capture from the pale glass pieces in her own collection of sea glass from a beach in Hampton, and to donate a portion of the proceeds from her own sales to a similar foundation, the Great Guana Cay Foundation, Abaco, Bahamas.
Shooting in the abstract, Maida said she never knows what will show up until it appears through the lens, and that it is always a thrill for her to see what takes shape...
