William Nelson Haywood, age 60, of Mathews, also known as Bubba to his friends and family, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012.
He was a Mathews High School Class of 1969 graduate, and attended the Newport News Shipyard Apprentice School for three years.
He was a commercial waterman, working in all the facets of the industry in Virginia and Delaware. His greatest love was the water. He was an accomplished musician with a band, and was very active in sports most of his life, especially softball.
He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Vernon Haywood, and step-father, John Long.
He is survived by his mother, Juanita Long of Mathews; brother, Vernon Grady Haywood and wife Sue; sister, Linda Hunley; niece, Brittany Haywood; two step-sons, Darrell Pittman and Joseph Mandell, and two step-grandchildren, Maria Pittman and Jackson Mandell.
Memorial services were held in Salem United Methodist Church, Diggs, at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012.
