WILLIAM JOSEPH POINTER

William Joseph Pointer, age 93, of Gloucester, passed away on October 6, 2023 at home surrounded by family. Joe was born on February 3, 1930 to Michael Harvey Pointer Sr. and Emma Sue Kemp Pointer. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Mike and Jimmy and sister, Elsie Lee. He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Nan; his sons, Glenn (Debora) and Owen (Teresa); his grandchildren, Chris (Paige) and Steven; three step-grandchildren, Brian Hill, Casey Hill and Taelor Antunes; four step-great-grandchildren, Carrington, Adelise, Gabriel and Zoe; sister, Kathleen Bristow; sister-in-law, Wyolene Pointer, and many nieces and nephews. Joe graduated from Botetourt High School and was one of the last four surviving members of the Class of 1947. He was a lifelong member of Bellamy United Methodist Church serving on various committees. He was a former Middle Peninsula Director of Chesapeake Bank. He had been a very active member of the Gloucester Farm Bureau for many years. He was a member of the York River Circle of The King’s Daughters and Sons. His dedicated vocation was farming. He and his brother, Jimmy, bought their first tractor when Joe was 15. Even before that, they salvaged old parts and made a tractor. He and Jimmy had a machine shop and in the early years, many farmers went to them for repair work.

They also did several mechanical projects for the Newport News Shipyard. Joe had a deep love of the land and great joy in seeing crops flourish. In addition to farming, Joe loved to travel. He and his wife visited most of the States, over 50 countries, and went to all seven continents. They enjoyed traveling with family and friends, making some lasting friendships. He enjoyed times with his family and playing cards with close friends. He also enjoyed fellowship with his many farmer friends. The family received friends on Monday, October 9, 2023, from 5-6:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home. The funeral service, conducted by Pastor Ed Walker, was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at Bellamy United Methodist Church, 4870 Chestnut Fork Road, Gloucester, Va. 23061 and interment followed in the church cemetery.
