William A. “Bill” Shook, Sr., age 84, of Asheville, N.C., died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014.
Mr. Shook was born Nov. 2, 1929 in New Kensington, Pa. He served 20 years active duty in the U.S. Navy, including the Korean War and 10 years in the Fleet Reserve.
The Shooks settled in Gloucester, Va., from 1967-2011, when they moved to Asheville. During his time in Virginia he owned and operated Shook Insurance Agency.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and football. Son of the late Milford Audley and Glenna Viola Weeter Shook, he was also preceded in death by a grandson, Joshua Motley.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Vivian Holliday Shook; daughters, Carol Tao and Patti Motley, both of Asheville; son, William A. “Bud” Shook Jr. and wife Jan of Vienna, Va.; foster daughter, Lori Leap and husband Ron of East Stroudsburg, Pa.; sisters, Claire Wiant of Meadville, Pa., and Elaine Moore and husband the Rev. Dennis Moore of Bastian, Va.; grandchildren, Jude Hargett, Stephanie Motley, Jennifer Shook, Luke Tao, and Brian Shook; foster grandchildren, Erica Osbeck and Ryan Leap; great-grandchildren, Sophie Ridenour, Corbin Hargett, Oskar Ridenour, and Ryder Hargett, and foster great-grandchild, Keegan Osbeck.
Military graveside services were held at 12 noon Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, N.C., followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. in Newbridge Baptist Church, Asheville, N.C., with the Reverends Clark Henderson and Dennis Moore (his brother-in-law) officiating.
