What you need to know when becoming a new pet ‘pawrent’

Getting a new pet is always exciting and nerve-wracking, especially for those first-time pet parents, or “pawrents.” The Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society is full of sound tips to help new pet owners and their animals adjust to life together.
Caitlin Donnelly, GMHS communications and development coordinator, said identifying the best fit for you is crucial. There are many different types of pets with varying personalities. Some are couch potatoes, others are ready to go on three-mile hikes and there are many who fall somewhere in between. Knowing your lifestyle can help you pick the right pet for yourself or your family.
GMHS can assist prospective adopters with the match-making process by helping them figure out “what it is that you want in an animal,” said Jasmine Jutras, GMHS assistant manager.
In addition to personality types, adopters should also consider their own life circumstances. This includes the presence of children and additional pets.
