Swimmers who took part in the fifth annual L. Wayne Hudgins Memorial Wharf to Wharf Swim at Williams Wharf on Sept. 18 faced cold, windy and rainy conditions.
But in spite of the uncommonly cold, rough waters, the swim was over in less than an hour and all 46 swimmers completed the 1,400-meter course—raising $13,151 in the process, according to coordinator Mimi Ulsaker.
Swimmers ranged in ages from 10 to over 80. Navy Ensign Tucker Witt, a Gloucester High School crew and Mobjack Rowing Association alumnus, retained his winning streak for the third straight year, finishing with a time of 19:08. He was closely followed by fellow naval officer Steve Krajewski at 19:39. Both are stationed in Virginia Beach.
Chelsea Adams, a Great Bridge High School senior and crew member, was the first female finishing, in 20:44. Adams has competed in crew regattas at Williams Wharf and has practiced in the summers with Mobjack rowers.
