Westmoreland Players cap season with production of ‘Matilda’

The Westmoreland Players ended another theatrical season with “Matilda the Musical,” by Roald Dahl, Dennis Kelly, and Tim Minchin. The musical featured a large cast of actors from Northumberland, Essex and Richmond counties, held July 28-Aug. 13.
Tickets for Matilda the Musical sold in record time, with the three weekends selling out before opening night.
Directed by Marcia Peters, the show featured vocals and choreography by the large cast of mostly child actors. Starting rehearsals in February, it was a sustained effort that brought the cast and crew together and gave them time to master the coordinated dances and musical numbers that drew the crowds, a release stated.
The role of Matilda was split between two actresses—Lillian Leddy and Charlotte Blackwell. The actresses became known during rehearsals as Matilda West and Matilda East, since Leddy was in town from the West Coast and Blackwell is a Northern Neck resident.
