The Mathews High School varsity football fell to 1-7 overall; 1-2 in the Tidewater District, following Friday night’s 68-12 defeat to the homestanding West Point Pointers.
Mathews was trailing, 28-0, when the Devils started coming back, with a 70-yard touchdown run by Dayshon Williamson and an 8-yard quarterback keeper by Ryan Ewell, closing the gap to 28-12. HWest Point scored twice more in the first half, and added four more touchdowns in the remaining two quarters.
West Point was led by Montel Allen, who rushed for 239 yards and four touchdowns. West Point QB Mikey Anerton completed 13 of 18 passes for 331 yards and four touchdowns, as well as a rushing TD.
"In the second quarter we were closing the gap after recovering a fumble," MHS head coach Paul White said. "The offense had some momentum, and we ended up turning the ball over. Mistakes are part of the game. My message to the team is—after a mistake, take the opportunity to play hard and regain the momentum. ...
