Welford Harvey West, 92, of Hampton, was called home to be with the Lord Tuesday, March 25, 2014.
Welford was born on June 7, 1921 in Gloucester Point, Va.
Welford was a World War II Navy veteran and served on the PT Boat 157 as a torpedo man. He also retired from the Army Corps of Engineers.
Welford was owner of the Gloucester Point Hairstyling Salon and the Tastee Freeze in Hayes.
Welford was preceded in death by his loving wife of 68 years, Rita West. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Willie H. and Alice R. West, as well as a brother, Edgar C. West Sr., and sister, Vernelle Berry.
Survivors includes two sons, Dennis West of Virginia Beach, Glenn West of Newport News; daughter, Brenda Toole of Newport News; grandchildren, Bobby West, Denise West, Mathew Toole, Adam Toole, Angela Murchison, Rebecca Kowalski; and eight great-grandchildren. Survivors also include two sisters, Alice C. West of Gloucester Point, and Omega “Kitty” Dawson of Dandy, now residing at Morningside, Newport News.
A service was held Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Inurnment with military honors was held on Sunday, March 30, 2014, at Hampton Memorial Gardens, Hampton, Va.
