Walk of Valor, a manned exhibit recognizing National Medal of Honor Day, will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. this Saturday, March 25, at Fort Magruder Hotel and Conference Center, 6945 Pocahontas Trail, Williamsburg.
Storyboards and actors will tell the stories of Union soldiers awarded the Medal of Honor for their actions during the Battle of Williamsburg and present the deeds of Confederate soldiers who acted bravely during the fighting. The event will also pull from the shadows of history the actions of courageous contraband who impacted the battle and broader emancipation movement.
Among those presenting will be Sgt. John N. Coyne of the 70th N.Y. Infantry describing his harrowing encounter with a Confederate flag bearer and the hand-to-hand combat that ensued; Lettie, who courageously ran away from enslavement on the Custis Farm and became a washer woman with the Union Army despite fears; and Dr. Edmund S. Pendleton, a sergeant of remarkable skill and bravery in the 4th Virginia...
