The Virginia Marine Resources Commission voted June 24 to lower the recreational possession limit of scup (porgy) from 50 to 30 fish.
The action was taken in order to maintain compliance with the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s interstate management plan for scup, according to VMRC public information officer Laurie Naismith.
On a separate matter, the commission granted a permit modification for Metro Fiber Networks, Inc., to install an eight-foot wide scour protection matting over 176 linear feet of submerged cable in the York River, approximately 1,000 feet upstream of the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge in York County.
The commission recommended approval contingent on the matting being buried a minimum of one foot below grade and an in-stream work time-of-year restriction of Feb. 15 to June 30 to protect anadromous fish.
