Virginia Hudgins Lewis, age 92, of Mathews, Va., passed away peacefully at her home in Redart on Sunday, April 2, 2023, surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was a longtime member of Mathews Baptist Church, having taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for over 30 years, and served as treasurer of the Woman’s Missionary Union. She also took great pleasure in singing with the Mathews Rhythm Band when visiting residents of the Mathews Convalescent Center. Virginia retired from Colonial Williamsburg after working for 25 years as a Master Tailor making colonial costumes for the historical park.
Virginia was predeceased by her parents, John Wesley and Edrie Downs Hudgins; her loving husband of 39 years, Dawcie (Harvey) Lewis Jr.; her two brothers, John Wesley Hudgins Jr. and Aubrey Dean Hudgins, and her only grandson, Gregory Lewis Trageser, the joy of her life.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda, and son-in-law, Michael Trageser, who has been like a son to her for over 40 years. She also is survived by her sisters-in-law, Shirley Hudgins, Eileen Haywood, Juanita Lewis and Agnes Lewis, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, April 7, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, 160 Main Street, Mathews, Va. 23109. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow at H.C. Smither Memorial Cemetery at Hudgins. There will be a reception held after the service at Mathews Baptist Church.
