The Virginia Institute of Marine Science’s proposal to create a co-culture of native grazers species with established farmed bivalves was one of four aquaculture pilot projects chosen to receive a grant from the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries provided the funds, approximately $570,000, as part of its efforts to foster responsible aquaculture and seafood security in the U.S.
All four projects chosen explore promising, but less commercially-developed, technologies for finfish and shellfish aquaculture. The projects are scheduled for completion in 2024.
To date, $3.43 million has been distributed or committed through six grant opportunities made available by NOAA and ASMFC.
