VHSL Speech Super Regionals

Mathews High School hosted the VHSL 1A/1B Speech Super Regionals on Saturday, welcoming teams from Appomattox Regional Governor’s School, and Brunswick, Cumberland, Buffalo Gap, Galileo Magnet and Northampton high schools. Cumberland was crowned the overall winners. Speech, formerly Forensics, includes a number of categories, including Prose and Poetry Interpretation, Extemporaneous Speaking, Storytelling and Dramatic Interpretation. From left, former MHS forensics competitor Haley Hoell served as a judge; Lucas Richmond was one of the MHS competitors; MHS coach Heather McDevitt; MHS competitor Josh Stillwaggon, and former MHS forensics competitor Natalie McDevitt, who served as a judge and assistant coach. Stillwaggon placed first in Impromtu and Richmond placed fourth in the same category.
