At its quarterly meeting in March, the Virginia Board of Historic Resources added multiple property locations related to African American watermen of the Chesapeake Bay to the Virginia Landmarks Register. Among the 78 sites included in the document are four in Gloucester and six in Mathews.
Gloucester sites listed are Bunting Oyster House at 6364 Allmondsville Road, Boat Ramp at 3257 Sandy Point Lane, Gloucester Seafood Inc. at 3923 Aberdeen Creek Road, and Cook’s Oyster & Seafood Company at 1778 Yacht Club Road.
Mathews sites listed are H.K. Billups & Son Oyster Shucking House on Williams Wharf Road, Callis Wharf at 425 Callis Wharf Road, Milford Haven Seafood at 407 Risby Town Road, Antioch Baptist Church at 110 Antioch Road, Winter Harbor Public Landing at 2959 Potato Neck Road, and Captain Charles Forrest Residence at 598 Antioch Road.
