The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team headed to unfamiliar territory on Saturday, traveling to Hampton Roads Academy to face the Navigators. The Devils played well as a team but their effort wasn’t enough to defeat the Navigators as the Devils lost by a final score of 59-46.
Deon Blake and Detray Washington led Mathews in scoring with 11 points apiece. Cody Kelly added seven points followed by Xavien Boone with six points. Also scoring was Gio Aromin, Matt Marquardt and Deondre Foster with three points each and Paul Burnette with two points.
On Tuesday, Mathews hosted West Point, honoring the players on Senior Night. From the opening tipoff, the Devils looked as if they wanted to win the game for their graduating seniors, taking a two-point lead after one quarter.
