Varsity Blue Devils add another win

The Mathews High School varsity baseball team had a busy week, taking on three opponents. The Devils split a pair of games in last week’s Middlesex Tournament, losing the first game to Washington and Lee and coming back to beat Lancaster in the consolation game.

Last Thursday’s game against Washington and Lee started out as a low-scoring affair, with Mathews holding the Eagles to only one run in the first four innings of play. Unfortunately, the W&L bats came alive in the fifth inning as the Eagles jumped out to a 6-0 lead.

Mathews tried to get something going, with Daniel Mitchem hitting a double to get the only Blue Devil RBI of the game. In the seventh inning, Washington and Lee struck back one last time, hitting a grand slam to make the final score 10-1.
