All executive departments and agencies of the U.S. Government, including all post offices in Gloucester and Mathews and the USDA Farm Service Agency and Natural Resources Conservation Service, both located in Gloucester, will be closed today, Thursday, Jan. 9, as a mark of respect for President Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the U.S., who died on Sunday, Dec. 29.
According to the executive order issued by President Joe Biden on Dec. 30, heads of departments and agencies can decide if parts of their organizations must remain open for national security or defense purposes “or other public need.”
