Two students injured in Saturday night Mathews bus crash

A Mathews County School bus, returning to Mathews on Saturday night from a band competition in Gloucester, was involved in a single-vehicle bus crash at the intersection of Route 14 and Buckley Hall Road in Mathews.
At approximately 10:22 p.m., Virginia State Police responded to the single-vehicle crash, according to a report from the VSP. The school bus, with approximately 26 children aboard, failed to stop at the intersection. The bus then proceeded down a four-foot ditch. Two of the students were transported with non-life-threatening injuries to Riverside Walter Reed Hospital. The students’ ages range from 14-17 years. All parents were notified by the school district.
It was determined that neither speed nor alcohol were contributing factors, the VSP stated. The school district arranged transportation for the other students on the bus. The crash is still under investigation at this time. Charges are pending at this time, the Virginia State Police stated.
