Truck ends up in waters off Gwynn’s Island

The Mathews County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an accident that occurred Monday night on Gwynn’s Island.
According to Sheriff April Edwards, a 4-door GMC pickup truck was found front-end-down on the riprap embankment along Old Ferry Road, with its cab submerged in Hills Bay, at around 9:30 p.m. Monday.
Edwards said the accident was called in by a resident who heard the crash but didn’t see it happen. Deputies who arrived searched for the driver, assisted by Mathews Volunteer Fire Department, but could not find anyone on the land or in the water.
They then identified and contacted the registered owner, and the truck was towed away. The case is pending further investigation.
Edwards said it was determined that the vehicle had been traveling onto the island, then crossed the road, hit a number of VDOT signs, and went down the riprap into the water.
