Tropical Storm Debby was poised off the coast of South Carolina on Wednesday morning, after having made landfall in Florida, then making its way across Georgia and South Carolina, posing a major flood threat to coastal communities.
The path of the storm was uncertain on Wednesday, but the National Weather Service online forecast showed a threat of excessive rainfall, thunderstorms, and localized flooding for Gloucester and Mathews from today through Saturday, with isolated tornados possible this afternoon across the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck.
Jordan Pegram, meteorologist with the National Weather Service at Wakefield, said forecasters “aren’t expecting too much tide-wise” with the storm in Gloucester and Mathews. She said there could be a slight rise in tides locally from today through early Friday morning, but “nothing that reaches an action stage.” There could, however, be high tides in the northern part of the Chesapeake Bay, near the Potomac River.
