Thirty-three collection boxes have been placed in businesses and other locations throughout Gloucester, and another 15 in Mathews, for those wishing to donate to the annual Toys for Tots drive.
Toys for Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve, which distributes toys to children whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for Christmas. Locally, Toys for Tots is headed up by Middle Peninsula Detachment #1317 of the Marine Corps League.
The boxes will remain in their various locations until Dec. 7, and a new toy or book can be dropped off to begiven to a local boy or girl at Christmas. To date, the program has distributed 677 million toys to 301 million children. Last year in Gloucester, 18,237 toys were distributed to 4,559 children.
A local Toys for Tots Stuff the Truck event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 30, at the Walgreens at Hayes.
