The U16 Tidewater field hockey team won the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games of Virginia, held on June 21-22 at the University of Virginia. The team, led by Gloucester High School head coach Mike Miller, had a large number of GHS players on its roster.
The teams playing represented the following regions: Blue Ridge, Coastal, Fredericksburg, Potomac, Piedmont, Tidewater and Virginia Beach. The Tidewater team finished pool play with a 4-0-2 record then defeated Coastal in the title game, 1-0. Players on the Tidewater team represented seven schools.
“I was so impressed with my team,” Miller said. “We only had four practices and our chemistry was just remarkable. We finished unscored on in seven games; that was so impressive to me. I’m just so proud of the girls’ effort and dedication. My coaching staff was re arkable and so helpful.”
