Tickets are available for the Judy Ward musical “Crickets on a Hill,” which will be presented at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 30, and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 1, at Mathews High School.
The show is a tribute to the Battle of Cricket Hill, which took place along the shores of mainland Mathews and Gwynn’s Island on July 9 and 10, 1776, marking the end of British rule in Virginia.
Arranged and fully orchestrated by David Shuber, Crickets on a Hill tells the story of a young man torn between his duty to England and his love for a rebellious America. Ward wrote the script and the music in 1976 for the bicentennial commemoration of the American Revolution.
The show kicks off Revolutionary Week in Mathews, a project of the Mathews County Historical Society and Mathews County Historical Museum that will end in a full-scale reenactment of the battle on Saturday and Sunday, July 7 and 8.
