Back from winter break, the Mathews High School wrestling team has had a successful week. MHS went 2-0 last Wednesday in a home tri-meet, defeating Northumberland and Lancaster. On Saturday, the Devils finished third in its Mathews Invitational behind two AA schools.
In last Wednesday’s tri-meet, Mathews easily defeated both Northern Neck opponents. The Devils crushed Northumberland, 66-6, with the only MHS loss being a forfeit at 145 lbs. The other match was a 54-21 victory over Lancaster.
In Saturday’s Mathews Invitational, Chancellor (248.5 points) won the competition, with York (201) and Mathews (174) right behind. Trailing the field were Lafayette (127.5), Northumberland (98), Franklin (86), Warhill (51), Peninsula Catholic (40) and Essex (19).
Eight of the 12 MHS wrestlers competing placed in their individual weight classes, including three champions—Caleb Miller (106 lbs.), James Pavik (220 lbs.) and Willie Moore (285 lbs.).
