Thomas Mitchell West, age 73, of Hayes, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at Heron Cove. Mitchell was born on March 27, 1951 to the late James Tyler and Dorothy Owens West. He was very dedicated to his job and retired from Newport News Shipbuilding in 2011. Mitchell, upon retirement, spent his free time relaxing, piddling in his yard, going to battle with the squirrels who run his yard, and watching his wonderful grandchildren grow up. He enjoyed watching NASCAR, the Dallas Cowboys, and college basketball, especially UVA. He and his wife enjoyed many trips to Nags Head to relax, dine on good food, watch waves crash, and soak in the salt air. In addition to his parents, Mitchell was preceded in death by his brothers, Wayne and David West. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Doris West; daughter, Aimee Layton (Greg); son, Jason Harris (Jill); grandchildren, Hannah and Hayden, Emma and Delaney, and great-grandchild, Hallie. He is also survived by his sister, Sherry Graves, and his best friend since elementary school, Ronnie Thomas. The family will receive friends at Hogg Funeral Home on Saturday, February 22, 2025, from 10-10:45 a.m., followed by the chapel service, conducted by Pastor Bill West, beginning at 11. The inurnment will be private. In memory of Mitchell, contributions may be made to the Abingdon Volunteer Fire & Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 9, Bena, Va. 23018.
