Two Thomas Hunter Middle School students—Isabella Newcomb and Brijido Fraire—are heading up a program designed to encourage safe driving habits in and around Mathews County.
The Mathews C.A.R.E.S. campaign (which stands for use Caution; Stay Aware, not distracted; show Respect on the roads; lead by Example; and obey Speed limits and signs) includes asking Mathews motorists to follow a QR code to sign an online pledge promising to abide by the safe driving guidelines. The girls have set a goal of 1,000 people to take this pledge.
The campaign is part of FACTS, one of eight national programs of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA).
The three main areas of concern for the C.A.R.E.S. campaign are addressing vehicles that pass stopped school buses, putting an end to speeding and improving visibility at the intersections of Main Street with Church Street and Brickbat Road in Mathews Court House.
