Gloucester held a groundbreaking for its new state park in March. Representatives from local government, state conservation groups, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, business sector, and native tribes stood shoulder to shoulder in damp, overcast conditions to turn the first shovels of dirt in Phase One of the build-out of the state park at Timberneck. This summer, a new name was announced for the as-yet-to-be-opened park, Machicomoco.
After months of site work, the solar array on Route 14 in Gloucester began generating power from the sun, fittingly enough, on Earth Day, April 22. The 20-megawatt facility was constructed by Strata Solar and later acquired by Dominion as part of an effort by Facebook, Inc., to mitigate the environmental impacts and energy demands of a data center in Henrico County.
