The Gazette-Journal last week featured this photo of Mathews County women quilting in 1975. This week we got the rest of the story. Rusty Morgan and Robin Sadler, from left, stand with the quilt. Robin said, “Our mother, Rachel Morgan, made this quilt top. It was pieced from scrap polyester left over from dresses she made for herself and me. She gave the quilt to me when I married in 1976. I call this my “ugly” quilt. It has been at the foot of my bed for 45 years. I still wash and dry it, which speaks to how well these ladies could quilt. My mother paid these ladies to quilt the top. My understanding is that they did the quilting to raise money for their missionary group at Bethel Church.” The quilters, from left, are Hattie Hudgins, Earline Forrest, Dana Hunt, Lillian Brooks, Bertha Diggs and Rachel Stewart.
