‘The Art of the Quilter’

A Colonial Williamsburg curator, Neal Hurst, center, spoke on “The Art of the Quilter” during a First Friday lecture last week at the Mathews Museum. Hurst talked about how quilts tell a story stitch by stitch and why Colonial Williamsburg collects quilts. He discussed the variety of techniques of the 18th and 19th century. CW currently preserves 500 quilts and 12 were chosen for a special exhibit currently at the Foster and Muriel Gallery, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum. The current exhibit at the Mathews Museum, “Threads of our History: Quilts of Mathews” continues through December. Special group tours can also be arranged, a notice said.
