Susan Turner Jackson was born on October 25, 1924 in Breathitt County, Kentucky. She passed away peacefully in her home in Gloucester surrounded by loving family on November 17, 2023. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter C. Jackson Sr.; her father, Robert Greenbury Turner, and mother, Martha Jane (McIntosh) Turner, as well as six brothers and three sisters. Susan “Sue” grew up during the Depression era as a coal miner’s daughter, a farmer’s daughter, and a daughter of a country preacher, who traveled the eastern Appalachian Mountains by horseback preaching and baptizing. At the beginning of World War II, she left Kentucky and traveled to Oakland, California, to work for the U.S. Army. There, she was destined to meet Walter Clyde Jackson returning from the Pacific War only to later reunite in Ohio and become his wife. Walter and Sue Jackson celebrated 55 wonderful years of marriage before Walter passed away on Christmas Day, the year 2000. Sue was the matriarch of the Jackson family and was blessed with five children, 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She leaves her children, Walter C. Jackson Jr. (Diane), Sheila Wells (George), Ronald L. Jackson (Michele), Robert A. Jackson (Cindy), and Paul A. Jackson (Carol). While her husband, Walter, circumnavigated the world with the U.S. Navy, Sue worked part-time jobs and stayed busy shuttling her children to all sorts of activities and sporting events. She loved math and occasionally volunteered at a local elementary school to help students better their math skills. Sue truly believed that loved ones and life were very precious and dedicated her life to this belief. She displayed the most amazing love for her husband, Walter; her children, and all the grandchildren who followed. Even in her later years, she had a very sharp mind and could relate wonderful stories of a country girl growing up during the Depression and World War II. She strongly believed that the basis for a healthy long life was “to keep moving” and challenging not only the physical body but the mind. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Riverside Hospice staff for the care shown to their mother. The family requests memorial contributions made to the Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1417, Gloucester, Va. 23061 or to a veteran’s charitable group. The family will receive friends at Hogg Funeral Home on Saturday, December 2, 2023, from 11-11:45 a.m. followed by chapel service to begin at 12 p.m. Interment will follow in Rosewell Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
