At a recent Mathews Rotary Club meeting, the group listened to a presentation given by Dr. David S. Daniel, Superintendent of Mathews County Public Schools. Daniel spoke about the progress the schools are making in academics as well as the challenges the division still faces. One of the most inspiring parts of Daniel’s talk was his describing the new shop program at Mathews High School with students building Tiny Houses. Students will learn multiple skills including carpentry, plumbing, electrical work and all the finishing touches such as flooring to work toward certification. The goal is to sell the completed tiny house to fund seed money for future projects. Rotary was inspired and gave Daniel $1,000 to start the seed money fund. Rotary encourages others to do the same. Rotary’s next fundraising event is the all-you-can-eat Oyster Roast and BBQ Riot on Saturday, Oct. 12.
