Supervisors discuss recent spate of supplemental tax bills

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors met with Mathews County Treasurer Wendy Stewart and Commissioner of the Revenue Les Hall on Feb. 25 to discuss the recent spate of supplemental personal property tax bills that were sent to some county residents. The meeting was held after a lengthy workshop on the board’s Code of Ethics and Rules of Procedure.
Hall and Stewart expressed appreciation to the board for having a chance to address the issue of the delayed tax bills. Hall said that in eight years he hadn’t had a supervisor drop by for the purpose of seeing how things work, and that he was glad to talk to the board “so you have at least some understanding of what goes on.”
Supervisor Mike Rowe asked the two to explain why the bills were late, and Stewart said that Hall had sent the information for the tax bills to her office in a timely fashion, but the information wasn’t transmitted correctly and some records got dropped.
