The life of Pulitzer Prize-winning author William Styron will be the subject of a free public lecture and neighborhood tour beginning at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Main Street Library in Newport News.
Official Styron biographer James L. West will speak, along with Newport News author William A. Fox and historians M. Huntley Galleher and Lewis Lawson. They will share insights about Styron’s youth in the Hilton Village neighborhood of Newport News and the region, which served as literary settings for some of his books.
Styron won the Pulitzer in 1968 for his novel “The Confessions of Nat Turner” and the National Book Award in 1980 for “Sophie’s Choice.” Among his other novels were such well-known works as “Lie Down in Darkness,” “A Tidewater Morning,” and “The Long March.” He died in 2006 at the age of 81.
The tour of Hilton Village is approximately one-half mile long.
