Structure fire at Stokes Drive causes extensive damage

Crews from Abingdon and Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue squads responded to a structure fire which may have been caused by a cigarette butt in the 7000 block of Stokes Drive in Hayes Sunday morning.
Abingdon responded with one medic unit, who arrived on scene first at 9:41 a.m., two engines and one tanker. GVFR also responded with one engine and one tanker. There were a total of 30 people on scene from Abingdon and Gloucester.
One person was in the house, but was out of the house before AVFR arrived on scene. AVFR captain Drew Luellen said that the fire wwas at the back of the house.
“According to what the resident told us, she put a cigarette butt into a trash can on the back of her house. I guess that trash can caught on fire,” Luellen said.
Luellen then said that the fire burned the back of the house, burned the vinyl siding and went into the eaves. The fire then went into the attic and started burning the house.
