State sendoff

In what is fast becoming a tradition at Mathews High School, the entire student body turned out on Friday morning to cheer on the athletes before they head to state competition. In this case, the school’s band and cheerleaders led members of the MHS wrestling team on a parade through the school before they were bussed out of the county with an escort from the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office on the way to this weekend’s VHSL Class 1/2 VHSL meet in Bristol. Leading the MHS wrestlers was Mikey Ray, who unfortunately was sidelined with a football injury before the start of his senior year of wrestling. Behind Ray are, from left, Sal Cardenas, Roane Gray (in back), Darin Echeverria, Jesse Monastyrly, Franklin Cardenas and Zac Salvadori. Unfortunately, the school won’t be able to hold a similar sendoff for indoor track, since that team was scheduled to leave at 7 a.m. Wednesday for their state meet, according to MHS Athletic Director Amy O’Neil.
