Youth day for turkey season was Saturday and 8-year-old Morgan Sterne bagged his first gobbler, while hunting in Mathews with his grandfather “Pop,” Chase Morgan. Young Morgan got the 17-pound bird, which he proudly showed off. The turkey had a 10-inch beard and 1-inch spur.
Spring turkey season in Virginia opens Saturday and continues through May 3.Youth day was last Saturday.Each day’s hunting may take place from one-half hour before sunrise until noon.
The limit is one per day, bearded turkeys only. According to the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, hunters may take one, two or three bearded turkeys depending on how many were taken in the fall season.
The department said it is conducting a statewide survey of spring turkey hunters, collecting observations; to take part, send name and mailing address to dgifweb@dgif.virginia.gov with “turkey survey” in the subject line.
