During senior nights at Essex, Northumberland and Middlesex high schools, the Virginia Northern Neck Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., awarded scholarships totaling $4,500 to four local students.
The scholarships were awarded based on the students’ academic success, involvement in the community and school activities. The Lillian Handy Waddy scholarship is awarded to students who plan to attend a Historically Black College or University (HBCU). This scholarship was established in memory of the late Lillian Handy Waddy who was a member of the Virginia Northern Neck Alumnae Chapter and one of many that chartered the chapter. Additionally, the late Dr. Carolyn W. Hines was also a member of the sorority and a charter member. She was an advocate for community engagement, educational advancement and cultural exposure.
